This is a continuation of the 114 hidden sayings of Yeshua as found in the Coptic Gospel of Thomas. This one is Yeshua’s response to Mary (Magdalene) when she asked him about his disciples.
Mary said to Jesus, “Whom are your disciples like?” He said, “They are like children who have settled in a field which is not theirs. When the owners of the field come, they will say, ‘Let us have back our field.’ They (will) undress in their presence in order to let them have back their field and to give it back to them. Therefore I say, if the owner of a house knows that the thief is coming, he will begin his vigil before he comes and will not let him dig through into his house of his domain to carry away his goods. You (pl.), then, be on your guard against the world. Arm yourselves with great strength lest the robbers find a way to come to you, for the difficulty which you expect will (surely) materialize. Let there be among you a man of understanding. When the grain ripened, he came quickly with his sickle in his hand and reaped it. Whoever has ears to hear let him hear.”
That was not what I was expecting to hear. I read it before, and obviously forgot what it said. I was drawn to it primarily because it is Mary Magdalene who is asking Yeshua about whom the disciples are like. I was drawn to it because Mary was a disciple, plain and simple, and if you read the Gospel of Mary you will find the typical response of the (male) disciple, notably Peter, querying why Yeshua would tell her, a woman, these things and not him.
As for Saying 21, part of it I recall from our Bibles; about the owner of a house being prepared if he knew a thief was about to show up.
Matthew 24:43 “But know this, that if the goodman of the house had known in what watch the thief would come, he would have watched, and would not have suffered his house to be broken up.”
But this Saying is much more than that for Yeshua is telling his disciples to be on guard against the world. That’s a great big world out there, and I am thinking that it will be of a personal nature as to what you or I need be on guard against so that the world not rob us of our treasures.
Can it be described in general terms. I am leaning towards being on guard against my realization of what is truth and what is real. I am at odds with ‘the world’ because I am (gratefully) learning that what is physical is not my reality. I cannot see anyone coming to steal that from me, because I think of myself as insignificant and of no threat, because I am not a high profile person who would be able to influence others to give up the ways of the world, i.e., the grappling for success and money above all else, no matter whose lives are hurt.
But, I do not see the big picture and I do not know what the Lord has in store for me or anyone of us who are on this path of Light. I must remember that the Lord can make a donkey talk, make a silk purse out of a sow’s ear, etc.
And, most importantly, we must all remember that it isn’t the “I” that I just wrote a second ago who would be a threat, it is the Holy Purpose of the Creator working through this human I. Whatever Creator determines comes to pass. It will be done.
As a final thought, I am feeling that the protection that would best help would be to be in the company and companionship of like minded people; those whose Lights are not just burning but slowly turning into flames and torches of truth. Because I the human am still thinking like the human, until I catch myself, I need others around me to give me a good nudge if I miss my silly and potentially harmful backsliding in my thinking.
The Lord calls, I respond here AM I Lord, and then He does the doing. That is the all that is required of the human person. To respond with a yes or a no. As always, the choice is ours.
