I heard a preacher giving a talk on comparison and my immediate thoughts were that if you and I truly believe in our own special individuality, then why are we always comparing ourselves to the lives and things of others like:
- how we look
- how we dress
- houses we live in
- jobs or careers we hold
- how much money we have
Those are the basics which I am sure can be broken down into sub-categories.
Comparison breeds discontent and discontent give birth to so many other negative thoughts, attitudes and actions.
If I truly believe the following about myself, then there is no need for me to be comparing myself about anything with any other person, place or thing:
- I am Loved and Love
- I am special
- I am unique
- Creator gifted me with everything I need or will ever want for my I AM journey
- I am a child of the King
- I am blessed beyond understanding
- I need only ask the Father for my needs
If I want to be truly content, happy and joyous I need to be infilled with these truths such that when I look at you or hear from you, who are also uniquely perfect, I will not:
- be envious of your success
- be jealous of your beauty
- be jealous of your possessions – including family and things
- be wanting what you have
- be negative in thought and speech toward you
- speak unkindly to or about you
- put you down to raise me up
Scripture references to the word compare all appear to be directing us to do comparison only as it relates to our relationship with YHWH. The following are the references I found in the KJV:
Psalm 89:6 For who in the heaven can be compared unto the LORD? who among the sons of the mighty can be likened unto the LORD?
Proverbs 3:15 She is more precious than rubies: and all the things thou canst desire are not to be compared unto her.
Proverbs 8:11 For wisdom is better than rubies; and all the things that may be desired are not to be compared to it.
Song of Solomon 1:9 I have compared thee, O my love, to a company of horses in Pharaoh’s chariots.
Isaiah 40:18 To whom then will ye liken God? or what likeness will ye compare unto him?
Isaiah 46:5 To whom will ye liken me, and make me equal, and compare me, that we may be like?
Mark 4:30 And he said, Whereunto shall we liken the kingdom of God? or with what comparison shall we compare it?
Romans 8:18 For I reckon that the sufferings of this present time are not worthy to be compared with the glory which shall be revealed in us.
2 Corinthians 10:12 For we dare not make ourselves of the number, or compare ourselves with some that commend themselves: but they measuring themselves by themselves, and comparing themselves among themselves, are not wise.
When I don’t compare my life to another, I really am a much happier person.
PS: As I am closing out this short blog, I just heard the preacher say that people who have more influence have less impact (influence). Now that’s something to think about if you have a tendency to compare your life to that of a movie star or music mogul!
